Case Study: eCommerce Cataloging for a Leading Marketplace

The Client

A well-established, leading online marketplace headquartered in USA, our client sells millions of items on a monthly basis across the world.

marketplace cataloging support

Due to diversified and excessively high quantum of items and other seasonal additions, the client was on the lookout for an eCommerce catalog management partner who could help them with expert and speedy eCommerce store management and marketplace cataloging on a daily basis.

The client wanted to ensure:

  • Uniformity and integrity in catalog management
  • Improved discoverability of items and information
  • Improved shopping experience for end customers
  • Positive selling experience for retailers

The Challenges

Being an online marketplace, the client works with several hundred retailers worldwide. Product Catalogs for eCommerce sites require managing incredible amounts of product data and information, including product categories, attributes and dimensions, product variants, short and extended product descriptions, and in particular high-quality product images. However, there was wide inconsistency in the cataloging practices of the retailers, selling through the client’s online marketplace.

This eCommerce MarketPlace Cataloging project was faced with numerous challenges including:

  • Miscataloging / inconsistent or erroneous product data uploads – causing annoying shopping experience – resulting in sharp decline in sales and store visitors. [For instance, an iPhone accessory getting categorized as an iPhone could lead to timewasting on part of the customer in going through with a fine-tooth comb through rows and pages of irrelevant results to discover the precise product.]
  • High costs of eCommerce Catalog Management.
  • Need for maintaining rapid turn-around time in adding new items, updating information and doing away with redundancies –to keep the sales process smooth.
  • Lack of proper infusion of keywords in product title and descriptions, cumbersome URLs.
  • High incidence of spelling errors or typos in product information – making it difficult to appear in automatic product searches.

The Solution

Effectively organizing the catalog data is an onerous task, and is critical for online retailers. deployed a team of 50 eCommerce catalogers, led by a highly experienced Project Manager. They were responsible for adding and updating new items as well as reviewing – and re-cataloging, if necessary – the existing items. Apart from the above mentioned tasks, the team also supported the client in:

  • Managing inventory, keeping track of backordered items and maintaining minimum and maximum product quantities
  • Image editing, resizing and watermarking (adding / removing as per the need of the client in specific cases)
  • Providing research support for special prices (through competitor price monitoring)
  • Editing and deleting product tags and product reviews on a regular basis
  • Rewriting URLs and adding meta-data for items and categories to make it search engine friendly
